To start, a recap:

iOS7 will be available for download from the app store on Sept. 18th – for free of course!  iOS7 is huge for Apple – it completely redefines the company’s signature look and feel, and provides some much-anticipated features in the software. You can see all the new features herehttp://www.apple.com/ios/?cid=wwa-us-kwg-features-com

Also, big news for iLife apps in iOS7: all 5 apps will be available for free on September18th:  that’s iWork, iPhoto, iMovie, Numbers and Pages.

Finally, a truly mobile solution for work.

Now on to the main attractions: the iPhones.

We were all expecting it, but it sure was cool to hear Apple announce not one, but two new iPhones – the iPhone 5C and their flagship model, the iPhone 5S.

First, a quick note about the iPhone 5: it’s being phased out.  Apple is not lowering the price of the iPhone 5, as it is being replaced by the iPhone 5S.

However, the iPhone 4S will still be available, and the 8GB will be a free phone with a two-year contract.

Now, on to the new iPhone 5C! Here are the pertinent details:

  • Five colors: green, white, blue, red, and yellow.
  • The iOS 7 wallpaper hue matches the color of the device
  • Power and volume buttons match the color of the device.
  • The color of the device “engineered in” – so not painted on.
  • 4-inch Retina display

  • New multi-band antenna built into the steel-reinforced frame that the iPhone 5C is molded around.
  • No seams on the outer shell of the device.
  • The camera is the same as the iPhone 4S, but now covered with a sapphire crystal lens, improving quality and reducing scratches.
  • Battery life:
    • Talk time on 3G: 10 hours
    • Standby: 250 hours
    • Internet use: 8 hours on 3G, up to 10 hours on LTE, and up to 10 hours on WiFi
    • Comes with A6 chip
    • New front-facing camera
    • FaceTime camera has 720p HD video recording and a new backside illumination sensor (this is a change from the VGA-resolution photos and videos of the iPhone 4S).
    • Price:
      • $99 for 16GB with a 2-year contract
      • $199 for 32GB with a 2-year contract
      • $29 for the Apple color cases designed to be used with the iPhone 5C

And now on to the big guns…

Details on the Phone 5S:

  • Available in 3 colors (space grey, gold, and white) – goodbye, black!
  • A7 chip, that is up to 40x faster than the iPhone 5
  • 64 bit processing for better speeds and clearer video quality.
  • Gaming experience comparable to consoles such as PS3 and Xbox 360.
  • Touch ID allows people to unlock their phone and make app purchases by identifying them by their fingerprint.

  • M7 processor designed to specifically measure motion data from various components.  Allows expansion of fitness apps and better utilization of battery power based on your current actions.
  • iSight Camera improves on low light picture taking, better color correction, and includes a slow motion 120 fps
  • Price:
    • $199 for 16GB with a 2-year contract
    • $299 for 32gb with 2-year contract
    • $399 for 64gb with 2-year contract

Reza Safai, MelroseMAC’s VP of Retail Sales and Operations, said “The release of two new iPhones really hit homes across the board from price, to color preference and sheer speed. Now, there is a tailored iPhone for everyone.”

Justin McCracken, who runs our Burbank location, and had a previous life with AT&T, said, “the new iPhones offer a lot of benefits and value for our customers.  With the new price points, we will be able to give our customers a wide range of options that will fit their lifestyle and budget.  I am really excited to be able to offer these solutions to our customers.”
